MAPS OF THE WORLD -- ON MACGLOBE
A recent column described the Grolier Encyclopedia, wherein 10
million words, pictures, sounds and maps on a CD-ROM can turn a home
into a knowledge and learning centre. The electronic encyclopedia
contains maps of the world, but if you haven't acquired that modern
brain-inputting device, consider MacGlobe, which contains maps and
statistical data from 190 countries, along with the national flags
in full color (color screen required). All on conventional Macintosh
floppy discs.
The maps vary from ordinary base maps to detailed ones showing cities
and land elevation. Comparison maps show product production and relationship to other countries producing the same product. The program
permits measuring distances instantly between points anywhere in the
world or between any of the 1,612 cities included in the program. The
maps show separately political, economic or regional groupings.
Selections can be colored electronically by the press of a key and
printed out on your own printer. Moving the mouse cursor over the
world map reveals the name of that country ... great and rapid method
of learning. Find where Reunion is (just east of Madagascar) and
pull up that country's map -- and to add to the fun, play that
country's national anthem right through the computer sound system.
Regional maps cover the entire world, Africa, Asia, Australia and
Oceania, Europe, North America, Central America, South America, the
Middle East and Southeast Asia. There are maps of 190 countries.
There are maps for such regional groups, as the OAS
(Organization of American States) and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and such economic group maps as the EEC
(European Economic Community). Political maps vary from the Arab
League to the recently defunct Warsaw Pact and NATO (North Atlantic
Treaty Organization).
Statistics and demographic information abounds on economies, health,
education, coal, electrical, natural gas, petroleum, mining, agriculture and manufacturing. Because change is occurring so rapidly
annual updates will be available and MacGlobe owners will be advised
from their program registration card information when the next update
will be available.
Age distribution charts for all 190 countries, plus charts that
answer almost any question, appear at the click of a mouse.
With this remarkable program, North America's low ratings in world
geographical knowledge could be altered substantially. Haven't you
heard? The world is globalizing. Don't just stand there - buy it!
It's only US $50.
