Lessons From The Future

BE THE FIRST ON YOUR COURSE -- WITH A ROBOT CADDY

Now that individual memberships at top Tokyo golf courses cost up to US$3 million, it was only a matter of time before personal robot caddies became de rigueur. But these caddies comes from America.

For the golfer, the very latest is a personal and respectful robot caddy called "Shedda" (Gaelic for "Shadow", naturally) that lugs those heavy clubs around 18 holes and is ready to do another round cheerfully.

This self-propelled, remote-controlled electronic caddy is just the gift for that golfer friend who must have everything. Unlike human caddies this one is automatically reminded to remain behind you on the course by the transmitter clipped to your golfing attire. For an extra US$50 to cover additional communications equipment, your golfing partner will also be served by the robot.

"Shedda" has a substantial figure, 47" long, 36" wide and weighs 199 lbs. including battery but not bags. It can haul 100 lbs. and can do an 18-hole course without recharging. In fact on a relatively flat course it may go for 27 holes.

Built-in design factors allow for easy maintenence, replacing parts, disassembly or placing in your car trunk. You only need one tool, to remove the bumper. With rear-wheel, variable speed drive, good traction on any course is assured with speeds up to 4.5 miles per hour. Variable angle steering handles uneven terrain.

To thwart those practical jokers you occasionally play with who might try to override your robot, it has 17 different control frequencies to prevent interference. It can ignore them with cold, snobbish electronic indifference.

For an extra $75 the robot comes with a second bag rack. A drink holder and sweater basket are optional accessories. Replacement batteries are US$150 and if your trunk is always full, the robot's own personal lightweight aluminum trailer is available for $850.

For a total of US$2,350 Shedda brings along its owner's manual, battery charger, transmitter and bag rack. Buy it. You know how hard it is to get good help these days. More information: Gettig Technologies, One Streamside Place, Springs Mills, PA 16875.
