ADVANCED GROWTH SYSTEMS
Things just aren't the way they used to be back on the farm. And
lots more changes are in sight!
At one time 98 percent of the population of North America were
farmers. It took that many to feed us all. Today less than two
percent of the population supplies all the food we need plus
exporting huge quantities to other world markets.
Every home gardener is aware that seeds sprout faster and appear
to be healthier if soaked first in water prior to planting. Up until
now that just wasn't practical for farmers. One reason being that
if you soaked the seeds and then couldn't plant - for whatever reason
-- the seeds rapidly sprouted rendering them valueless. It was also
time-consuming and labor intensive.
Today a new patented almost automatic process allows farmers to
pre-soaked seeds 30 minutes prior to planting at the most reasonable
cost of $1.50 per acre. There are additional values to this system
that appear after planting, according to Professor J. Derek Bewley,
of the Univ. of Guelph, Ontario. The seeds grow root structures more
rapidly and energy previously wasted in breaking hard seed covers is
now diverted to growth. The roots reach lower water levels well
before the summer dry season appears. They get a jump over weed
competitors and they survive better in the cold spring soils. They
also are healthier and are harvestable up to two weeks earlier then
normally planted seeds -- a big, big factor if there happens to be
an early frost that year. The latter a real problem in much of this
country's marginal growing areas. Growers have reported yield
increases of 30 to 86 percent using this new process.
