STEAK FROM SAWDUST
With low-wage foreign competition, robotronic workerless factories, genetically altered trees and ceramic houses wiping away our
traditional lumber markets there still may be hope for the forest
industry. And, from a Canadian company at that! They say don't waste
it. Eat it!
Various companies have been working to find a fast, economical
process to convert woodchips, sawdust, bark, etc. into a digestible,
palatable substance that contains oodles of energy. It may be closer
than you think. A way to convert these materials into one of the most
valuable agricultural products in the world is now a distinct
possibility. Waste-disposal problems evaporate as this high-grade
cattle feed reduces food costs. No longer will it be necessary to
produce hundreds of thousands of tons of wheat, alfalfa and oats
along with four-fifths of the world corn crop just to satisfy our
demand for beef.
A new method to unlock the nutritional value of cellulose has been
found. Unlike grasses and grains which have readily digestible
cellulose, plant waste has a "shell" that up until now has proved
very difficult to remove. The new way -- autohydrolysis -- making
the trapped cellulose free itself.
The process involves superpressurized steam which produces lowcost, high-quality feed in five minutes -- WITHOUT CHEMICAL
ADDITIVES! Usable by-products reduce production costs. Pilot plants
underway in several locations. Barbecue sales should soar.
