BOMB BOOSTS BRAIN? 

WHEN ATOMIC BOMBS EXPLODED OVER JAPAN IN 1945, DID SOMETHING ELSE HAPPEN BESIDES MASS DESTRUCTION? POSSIBLY, YES.

DR. DERM BARRETT DOESN'T BELIEVE THAT THE ATOMIC EXPLOSION CAUSED THE SUDDEN INCREASE IN JAPANESE CREATIVITY, INNOVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY, BUT HE ADMITS "THE JAPANESE ARE NOW THINKING DIFFERENTLY". AND HARVARD AND FORMER DIRECTOR OF THEINSTITUTE OF CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION AT YORK UNIVERSITY, TORONTO IS PRESIDENT OF TORONTO-BASED MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS LTD. HIS SEMINARS ON CREATIVITY, TIME MANAGEMENT AND CREATIVE DREAMING ARE IN DEMAND AROUND THE WORLD. SOUTH AMERICANS ARE ESPECIALLY INTRIGUED BY HIS THEORIES. BARRETT SAYS THE JAPANESE, A NATION OF ANCESTOR WORSHIPPERS, HAVE NOW TURNED THEIR CONCENTRATION TO THE FUTURE. THE "BARRETT THEOREM" SAYS THAT "THE JAPANESE ARE FIRST AS A NATION IN EXPLOITING THE CAPABILITIES OF THE FRONTAL LOBE TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY AS NO NATION HAS EVER DONE BEFORE.

SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO THE JAPANESE HAVE MADE A MIRACULOUS ECONOMIC RECOVERY. THEY HAVE NOT JUST MASTERED WESTERN WORLD TECH- NIQUES OF MASS PRODUCTION: THEY NOW LEAD THE WORLD IN VIRTUALLY EVERY AREA OF TECHNOLOGY. THEIR LEAD IS SO GREAT IT'S DOUBTFUL THAT ANYONE -- EVEN AMERICANS -- WILL BE ABLE TO CATCH UP.

IF CORRECT, THIS IDEA MODIFIES THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION. SINCE DARWIN, SCIENCE HAS ACCEPTED THAT EVOLUTION FOLLOWS A LONG, SLOW AND GRADUAL PATH UP THE LADDER FROM THE TIME OUR FOREBEARERS LIFTED THEMSELVES OUT OF THE SEA. LATELY, THAT SCIENTIFIC THEORY HAS BEEN CHANGING SOMEWHAT. NOW SOME SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THAT THE PATH WASN'T A SLOW AND GRADUAL UPHILL SLOPE BUT FLAT WITH SUDDEN CLIFFS TO CLIMB. THIS MAY BE THE NEW ROCKFACE. IN THE FRAMEWORK OF GEOLOGICAL HISTORY, PERHAPS THE SAME THING CAN HAPPEN INSTANTLY! BARRETT DOESN'T AGREE. HE BELIEVES "THIS IS RATHER A SUDDEN LEAP IN CONSCIOUS AWARENESS". HE FURTHER BELIEVES THAT THE JAPANESE GLOBAL EXPANSION IS A CONSEQUENCE OF THIS LONGER RANGE VIEWPOINT. AND, A LONG RANGE VIEWPOINT AUTOMA- TICALLY CREATES A BROADER PROSPECTIVE.

IN 1968 OVER JOHNSTON ISLAND, 1,100 KILOMETRES SOUTH OF HAWAII, THE AMERICANS CONDUCTED AN ATOMIC BOMB TEST. IMMEDIATELY, ALL LIGHTS, METERS AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS ACTED STRANGELY AND INACCURATELY BECAUSE THE FORCE OF THIS ATOMIC BLAST CAUSED ELECTRONS TO FORM INTO WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS EMP (ELECTROMAGNETIC PULSE). UNTIL THAT TIME MAN WAS UNAWARE OF THIS BYPRODUCT OF ATOMIC EXPLOSIONS.

DURING THE PAST DECADE THE UNITED STATES HAS REPORTEDLY BEEN SPENDING UP TO $250 MILLION ANNUALLY TO FIND A DEFENSIVE SHIELD AGAINST EMP. IT HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED THAT SOME AIRBORNE RUSSIAN COMPUTERS STILL USE OLD-STYLE VACUUM TUBES -- BECAUSE THIS TYPE OF TUBE IS NOT SUBJECT TO BEING "FRIED" BY EMP AS ARE MICRO-CHIPS. THE NEW BOEING 747-400 SERIES WITH ROLLS ROYCE COMPUTERIZED ENGINES, ACCORDING TO ENGINEERS AT THE BOEING PLANT IN EVERETT, WASHINGTON, ARE ALSO "HARDENED" AGAINST EMP!

THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT EXPOSURE TO A MASSIVE DOUBLE JOLT OF EMP -- FROM ATOMIC EXPOSIONS AT HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI -- COULD HAVE CAUSED POSITIVE GENETIC CHANGES IN THE BRAIN CELLS OF A LARGE SEGMENT OF THE POPULATION OF JAPAN. THIS MAY ACCOUNT FOR JAPAN'S 40 YEARS OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION AHEAD OF THE REST OF THE WORLD. IN EVOLUTION, A VERY SMALL ADVANTAGE ENSURES SURVIVAL.

WOULDN'T IT BE AN IRONY OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS IF AMERICANS, IN TRYING TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM A PHYSICALLY SUPERIOR MILITARY OCCUPATION, INSTEAD CREATED A RACE CAPABLE OF INTELLECTUALLY OCCUPYING THE TOP WORLD ECONOMIC POSITION?

A 1982 STUDY BY BRITISH PSYCHOLOGIST RICHARD LYNN SHOWS THAT TWO PERCENT OF AMERICAN HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE I.Q.S HIGHER THAN 130. IN JAPAN MORE THAN 10 PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS EXCEED THAT CRITERION LEVEL! THE AVERAGE STUDENT I.Q. IN JAPAN IS 111. FIFTY PERCENT OF U.S. KIDS RATE, BY DEFINITION, UNDER 100. ON A TEST DESIGNED BY AMERICANS! WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED?
